This qualitative study takes a bottom up approach to classify fertility intentions starting from subjective reports of fertility goals and related intentions. 261 individuals in different European countries declared their fertility intentions in semistructured interviews and they were classified according to the clarity of the goal, the strength with which it is expressed, and the time horizon for its realization. Altogether, six categories of fertility intentions were developed: (1) “surely yes”, (2) “surely not”, (3) “as soon as”, (4) “surely one day”, (5) “maybe” and (6) “at times” Classification-fertility-intentions.pdf (30-page report)
